Bob Krohn was a precious man to me, and everybody knew him. One time I stopped for lunch at a small restaurant in Medaryville, since closed and reopened. By good fortune, Bob decided to have lunch there also, and we had a very nice visit. I asked him, “Do you eat here often?” He said, “No, just ever once in a while.” However, the cook knew him by name, as did the next five or six people who came in.
I recently planted two oak trees close to our house. My entire purpose in planting the trees where I did was to create a place–probably for my grandkids–to sit under a tree and visit like Bob loved to do. I stopped by his house once unbidden just to see what Bob was up to. He was working on the combine (this was in August) and was “awful busy” (wink wink). He went in and got us a glass of water, and we sat under the tree and visited for about two hours. I can’t think of a single person who I enjoyed visiting with more than Bob.
I remember when I was a boy, we would go over to Bob and Martha’s house. He was like Grizzly Adams, always having a variety of animals running around his farm. I remember he once had a baby deer he named John Deere. At one point he had a pet owl. There were also a variety of other animals like goats and such. Over the years, he has had about 752 dogs, all of then named “Brown”. If I recall, some weren’t.
The world is a bit sadder today today without the humor and kindness of Uncle Bob here among us.
I recall stories of him fabricating letters to send to his friends and family, including one claiming to come from NASA sent to one of his friends about the makeup of popcorn balls the lady made. NASA was, according the letter, quite interested to know the construction of these popcorn balls and how they could be so durable.
Things must be quite challenging for folks in heaven looking down on us, such that God needed to call on Uncle Bob to go up to heaven to cheer up the place!
I will always remember Uncle Bob as a happy, fun-loving gentleman who treasured his family and had a very deep faith in God…and I will always smile when I think of all the stories he told about the goats he had on his farmland. He would always laugh about the antics of the goats…climbing up on things and somehow finding a way to slide down to safety….Uncle Bob always saw the very best in everything and enjoyed sharing stories about the humorous things that happen in life. He will be missed very much Anna Hatfield
For everyone who posts something on here thank you so much. There were many good stories that floated around the church and the community. I think Mike McKay started that haha due to every embarrassing moment grandpa ever had Mike would be the first to tell everyone haha
. As a little girl growing up I always heard 2 things when people found out Bob was my grandpa. The first being he is so ornery, you aren’t like that are you? I would always smile then end up laughing and saying no sarcasticly. The second being you have to have the best grandpa in the world. As a matter of fact during the fair, a week ago, I heard those two things. Now I can only think how lucky I, along with the rest of the grandkids were, to have Bob as our grandpa. Though it hurts still and will for a while, God knows what he is doing. Grandpa did not suffer, Cancer did not beat him, and end up losing his mind. He just fell asleep. That is exactly how he wanted to go to Heaven. He got to see the Lord, Cary, his parents and his grandparents. Though it is so hard to let someone so loved go, I am so happy for Grandpa.
Having gone to school with Chris, I got to know Bob and Martha on more of a “family” level. Martha was one of my extra moms and always made me feel welcome at their home. While there, I also looked forward to hearing Bob stories. Nobody could spin a yarn like Bob. For several years, if you ran into Bob in town, at the hardware store, where ever, he would tell you he’d been working really hard (even though you knew he had just come from the Colonial Inn !!) Once many years ago, I was driving out to their house shortly after I got my license. Snow, inexperience, and bad luck put me in a side ditch. After a phone call, here comes Bob and Chris to pull me out. Many years later, Bob would repeat this story many times to my children. Whenever Bob would see my kids, it seemed like every conversation would start like” Do you know your dad used to do…….” Bob and his stories will be greatly missed! I do know this…. Heaven’s Coffee Shop just got it’s newest and greatest member!! Thank You for being my friend.
I will always remeber Bob Krohn as one of my grandpa’s best friends. I grew up with my grandma watching Holly and Kyle for years and years. One of my best memories about Bob was when we went on our big family church camping trip. When Bob and Martha got there they had to unload a couple things and left their trunk open, and inside was a toilet seat. A couple other ornery “elders” took that toilet seat and set it on top of the Krohn’s car on display for everyone to see. Bob had a hunch who did it and he had an idea I knew who it was
. The first Sunday at church after our camping trip he asked me who was all in the toilet seat prank. You know how hard it is to keep a straight face around that man, and he got the answer he knew all along, my grandpa (Don Norrick), and Mr. Mitchell were the other two ornery men. For the longest time Bob always joked about that and many other things like always. Bob Krohn will forever be in all of our memories!
When I worked at McDonald’s and I saw Bob come in for coffee, he was always a smile and handshake away from making my day. There were a coulpe of Sundays where he came in, and I would ask him why he wasn’t in church. He would ask me which excuse he had already used, and then make up a new one. Bob had a great influence on everybody he met and I’ll miss him so much.
Bob Krohn….there is only one. Always a smile…always ready to just enjoy each moment. An uncanny ability to befriend everyone he approached. We had fun jabbing each other. When he was a mail carrier in Winamac I was having a ‘problem’ with sayings, scrbblings, stick people, etc. on the envelopes of my mail which came through the Winamac Post Office. If I guess, I am probably not the only person with this experience. Of course, he was befuddled that this could be happening, but assured me over and over that they were close to finding the culprit, or …we thought we had him but are going to have start over from scratch. I once asked him if he thought it might be an ‘inside prankster’. Of course with his grin, he suggested that he did not think so but that he would keep his eyes open. And of course, when Bob retired…no more drawings on the envelopes…..and of course, they had caught the guy just before Bob retired. Thank you Bob for being a great mentor and example as a Christian brother, father, and husband.
